Colorado Air National Guard Units
The 140th Wing, Colorado Air National Guard is unique in that it is comprised of four groups, 11 squadrons, and three geographically separated units (GSUs). 140th Wing operates three missions that fall under three different commands: the F-16 mission, operating under Air Combat Command; the C-21 mission, operating under Air Mobility Command; and the Space Warning mission, operating under Space Command. In addition, the Colorado Air Guard also has three GSUs, the C-21 Airlift Squadron, the 137th Space Warning Squadron, and the 240th Civil Engineering Flight, which operates under Pacific Air Forces. The 1500 personnel are permanently assigned to Buckley AFB, Greeley ANGS, Peterson AFB, and Airburst Range near Ft. Carson and make up units that provide fighter, airlift and support forces. ANG: A Short Story
The Air National Guard as we know it today -- a separate reserve component of the United States Air Force -- was a product of the politics of postwar planning and interservice rivalry during World War II. The men who planned and maneuvered for an independent postwar Air Force during World War II didn't place much faith in the reserves, especially the state-dominated National Guard.
